More than 1.4 million New Yorkers experience food insecurity, even as enormous amounts of fresh, nutritious and perfectly edible food are discarded every day. The Friendly Fridge BX works to change that equation by rescuing and redirecting good food into our community—helping increase access to healthy food while reducing the environmental impact of food waste.
Founded in May 2020 as the first community fridge in the Bronx, the Friendly Fridge BX has grown into a community food hub that now redirects more than 70,000 pounds of food each month. Through partnerships with schools, restaurants, bakeries, farms, markets, food rescue organizations and neighbors, we create a hyper-local ecosystem where surplus food becomes a community resource. Our goal isn't simply to distribute food—it is to normalize food redirection and demonstrate that food waste and food insecurity are interconnected problems that communities can help solve together.
