Food waste is an environmental disaster that can be easily transformed into a hunger and environmental solution.
Two million New York City residents - nearly 1 in 3, experience food and/or nutritional insecurity while 68% of discarded food in New York City is edible. The Friendly Fridge BX is working hard to redirect good food into the hands of folks who can use a little extra help. Together we can all eat while caring for our planet.
As the Friendly Fridge BX team-the first community fridge in the Bronx, we rescue & redirect food from the surrounding community through outreach & action.
Thanks to the YES Network for this amazing video!
What Folks Are Saying
“Hunger has no name.”
— a houseless woman who loves the prepared meals and the dignity with which she can select what she wants.
“Picking up a few extra things here helps me save money for their summer camp.”
— a single mom
“I come for the vegetables. I’m trying so hard to eat healthy but it’s so expensive.”
— a senior citizen who lives in a nearby building and works hard to stretch her fixed income
“I don’t have teeth so I love the soup.”
— an elderly gentleman living in a single room occupancy
As a community, we are normalizing the concept of sharing food. Anyone can participate, putting food in and taking what they need.
